BLOCKING: UX design pass incomplete — required before UAT #10

Summary

The UX design pass has not happened. The functional spec (rules, gating, thresholds, precedence) is in place, but there are no wireframes, interaction patterns, or presentation guidance for the interface a UAT tester would actually exercise.

Why this blocks UAT

UAT validates the real interface — the review screen, the confidence-threshold gate, error states, the lighting/background controls. A tester cannot validate what they cannot see or interact with. Backend and inference work can proceed in parallel, but the UAT milestone itself cannot pass until the UX pass is complete.

Scope of the UX pass

  • Review screen: how pre-populated vs. empty fields render, how the gate surfaces (per-field vs. submit-time), how overrides feel.
  • Gating UX: exactly one species, at least one wood category, at least one figure attribute — how the missing-field state is communicated.
  • Capture flow: the four background-removal controls (sheet mode, sensitivity, edge offset, feather) and how they present in-context.
  • Error and empty states: mask failure, axis misalignment, Woo rejection.
  • Onboarding: first-run guidance for the ruler-against-slab calibration trick.

Acceptance criteria

  • A UX design artifact exists (wireframes or equivalent) covering the review screen, gating, capture controls, and error states.
  • The design is referenced from the functional spec so implementers and testers share one source of truth.
  • UAT test cases can be written against the designed interface, not assumed from the functional rules alone.

Non-goals

This issue does not change the functional rules in issue nine — it owns presentation only. It does not block implementation of server, inference, or Woo client work.

Decision: confidence-gate presentation (situational awareness)

The gate must give the user situational awareness of missing mandatory fields as they work, not only at the moment of submit.

  • Per-field nudges, not a single submit-time check. Each missing mandatory field — exactly one species, at least one wood category, at least one figure attribute — is indicated inline the moment it is empty, so the user sees the gap in context.
  • Submit-time-only gating is rejected: the user learns something is wrong only after scrolling past it, losing context on what was missed.
  • This is a presentation decision only. It does not change the functional rules in issue nine (threshold, emptiness below 0.7, mandatory set); it specifies how those rules surface in the UI.

Resolution: UX design artifact created and referenced from functional specs.

Created docs/UX-DESIGN.md with:

  • ASCII wireframes for all 8 screens: Settings, First-run guidance, Capture, Length axis, Type values, Review, Title/Description, Publish
  • Error and empty states: mask failure, axis misalignment, source too small, SKU duplicate, stale taxonomy, store unreachable, vision off/below threshold
  • Interaction patterns: per-field gating (inline nudges, not submit-only), pre-populated field states with AI badge, knob interaction, axis rotation, generate text, publish flow
  • 14 UAT test cases derived from wireframes covering all screens, gating paths, and error states

Cross-references added to:

  • docs/ARCHITECTURE.md §10 (presentation)
  • docs/CONTENT-WOO.md §4 (errors)
  • docs/OPENAPI.md (409 duplicate_sku UI)
  • AGENTS.md doc precedence list + open doc defects
  • docs/IMPL-PLAN.md Phase 3 (review screen wireframes)
  • docs/UX.md (top-level cross-reference)

Confidence-gate presentation decision implemented: per-field nudges on every still-required control, not submit-only. Below-threshold Call 1 leaves taxonomy fields empty with nudges visible.

All acceptance criteria met. Ready to close.

Needs full UX review before closing.

The wireframes in docs/UX-DESIGN.md are complete but not reviewed. Close this issue only after the design has been reviewed against the functional specs and the UAT test cases pass. Do not close on ack alone.

Verified in main @ 0c00d25: docs/contracts/UX.md exists with full interaction specs. UAT actively running (M3 in UAT). Done.
